$TARDI
Survived space. Survives this.
Half a millimetre long, eight legs, no opinions about the market. When conditions turn hostile the tardigrade squeezes out its water, curls into a barrel and waits. Years, if needed. Then it gets up and carries on.
CA: published here at launch
−272 °C to 150 °C
Briefly, and with the right preparation, tardigrades have endured both ends of that range in the lab.
Open vacuum
On the ESA FOTON-M3 mission in 2007 they were exposed to space itself. Some survived and went on to lay viable eggs.
Years without water
In the dried-out tun state their metabolism drops to almost nothing. Add water and they wake up.
The trick
It's called cryptobiosis. The animal pushes out most of its body water and replaces it with protective sugars and disordered proteins that set like glass around its cells. Nothing moves, nothing degrades, nothing panics. That is the entire strategy, and it has worked for roughly half a billion years.
